What this market video covers
Two different standard deviations can describe the exact same five prices. This historical Salesforce IEX replay uses five completed five minute closes from October eighth, twenty twenty six. Treat those five observations as the entire set being described. Divide the sum of squared distances from their mean by five, then take the square root. Population standard deviation is approximately zero point five three three dollars. Use the sample convention instead: divide by four. Sample standard deviation is approximately zero point five nine six dollars. The market did not become more volatile between calculations. The denominator changed. These are deviations of price levels, not percentage returns or an annualized volatility estimate. Match the statistical convention before comparing indicator values or research results.
